Studies have shown that companies in process manufacturing industries have a high potential for getting 'smarter'. Yet, there are many questions that arise from these findings: What will be the leading application that will drive smart technologies in process manufacturing? Which benefits can be assumed from smart production, assets or services? Which technologies in terms of sensors, network technologies and data analytics can be applied for specific problems?

In cooperation with relevant market players, KEX Knowledge Exchange and execon partners is conducting a focused project on »Digitalization in Process Manufacturing«, which covers the fields of smart production, smart assets and smart services.

Motivation

Digitalization of production processes, including the integration of networking capabilities into production assets, is no longer just affecting the discrete manufacturing industries. Terms like »Internet of Things«, »Industrie 4.0«, »The Industrial Internet« or »Big Data« are just examples for the diversity of buzzwords that are used. But what do these buzzwords mean for companies in process manufacturing industries, particularly regarding their production processes, production technologies and value-added services?

In the consortium project we aim to get answers to these and many other questions:
